MLK Day Celebration

Every year Watkinson holds an MLK day celebration, typically the Friday before the official MLK day. This year my favorite workshop that I participated in was the “Beauty and Bias” workshop. It discussed complex themes of the harmful effects of the high beauty standards around the world, and how only a select few are featured as ideal and those without that skin tone or attribute are considered “other”. This workshop also brought up our global studies skill of “Thinking critically and creatively, including adopting a multiperspective approach that recognizes the different dimensions and angles of an issue.” Specifically for example, the fact that we have to look at the biases of the beauty standard and the ideologies of beauty in general to see the full picture. Additionally one can connect the theme of non-violence to the Beauty and Bias workshop because an underlying message was to spread love and positivity, not hate and bringing others down. In the future, I will try to continue purchasing products from inclusive and cruelty-free brands in order to help make a difference.
